About This Event
Published April 17, 2026
UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. One of the largest indigenous-Catholic pilgrimages in South America, attracting ~90,000–100,000 pilgrims to the Sinakara glacier at 4,600m (15,000ft) on the slopes of Mt Ausangate. Pilgrims trek ~8km from Mahuayani to the sanctuary; dance groups (comparsas) perform in elaborate costumes. Ukukus (mystical half-man, half-bear figures) ascend the glacier at night. The pilgrimage concludes in Cusco as participants join the Corpus Christi procession. Free to attend. The 2026 dates run from May 31 to June 3 (partially overlapping with June).
