About This Event
GYMRACE Utrecht 2026: Two Days of Indoor Fitness Racing at Jaarbeurs, May 2–3
There is a moment in any serious fitness event when the question of whether you should be doing this stops being relevant and the only thing that matters is the next metre. GYMRACE is built entirely around that moment — and on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2026, it returns to the Jaarbeurs Utrecht for a two-day edition that the organisers have already described as the most anticipated Dutch edition of the year, with Saturday almost sold out as of the ticket announcement.
This is an indoor fitness race — a completely different animal from an outdoor mud run or a track event. The entire Jaarbeurs exhibition hall is transformed into a race circuit combining 5 x 1,000 metres of running with gym-based obstacle stations in between each running segment — all of it set to a pumping DJ soundtrack, driven by live MCs, and shared with hundreds of other competitors who are doing exactly what you're doing: testing themselves, helping each other, and finishing.
Tickets at gymrace.com. Saturday almost sold out — Sunday still available.
What GYMRACE Actually Is: The Format Explained
GYMRACE is what happens when you combine the infrastructure and atmosphere of the gym with the competitive format of an obstacle race, bring the whole thing inside a massive exhibition hall, and add professional event production.
The race structure is straightforward in concept and genuinely demanding in practice:
5 running segments of 1,000 metres each — running on the circuit laid out across the Jaarbeurs hall floor, with each lap tracked by the live timing system
Between each running segment: a gym exercise station — the stations are where GYMRACE separates itself from a straightforward running race; the exercises are drawn from functional fitness and gym training, meaning that being a good runner is not enough — you need to be able to work through heavy load, pull movements, push movements, and skill-based exercises in sequence
Total race distance: 5,000 metres — but the fatigue accumulation from the gym stations means that the fifth running segment is significantly more demanding than the first, even though the distance is identical
The result is a complete fitness test: cardiovascular capacity, muscular endurance, functional strength, and the mental discipline to keep moving when every part of you wants to slow down.
Race Categories: Solo, Buddies, and Heavy Variants
GYMRACE is organised into a structured programme of start waves across both days — ensuring that every category has a dedicated start window and that the race circuit never becomes dangerously overcrowded.
Race formats:
Solo — individual entry; you race on your own time, against your own goals and the clock
Buddies — duo entry; you race together; either mixed (one man, one woman) or same-gender buddies pairs; the Buddies format changes the character of the event significantly — the mutual accountability of a partner who cannot let down the person racing with them is one of the most powerful motivational forces in any endurance event, and the Buddies category is consistently among the most popular at every GYMRACE edition
Heavy — available in both Solo and Buddies formats; the Heavy variant adds additional load or resistance to the exercise stations, increasing the demand on muscular strength relative to the standard track; recommended for participants with a strong gym training background who want the event to push them beyond what standard difficulty provides

The Event Atmosphere: Pumping Beats, Live MCs, and a Community That Gets It
One of the things that consistently distinguishes GYMRACE from a purely competitive fitness event is the investment in atmosphere — the understanding that the people who participate in events like this are motivated not just by personal performance targets but by the energy of being in a room with hundreds of others who share the same commitment.
Live DJs run continuous music across both days of the event — the soundtrack is specifically chosen for high-intensity exercise, with BPM and energy levels calibrated to the race circuit rather than a general fitness class
Live MCs commentate and encourage throughout the event — the MC presence transforms what could be a cold competitive environment into something closer to a collective sporting event where every individual is simultaneously competing and being cheered
The community — GYMRACE is organised by the Mud Masters team, which has been running major sports events in the Netherlands and Germany since 2012. The participant base they have built over 14 years of event organisation is one of the most loyal in Dutch fitness events: people who have done GYMRACE before come back because the combination of challenge and community is difficult to find elsewhere.
Partners for the Utrecht 2026 edition:
- UnScared Fitness — contributing to the exercise station design and the overall workout programming
- Concept2 — the world-leading rowing and skiing ergometer manufacturer whose equipment is the industry standard for functional fitness events at this level
- Lifemaxx — Dutch fitness equipment brand supplying additional station equipment
What's Included in Your GYMRACE Ticket
Every GYMRACE Utrecht entry ticket includes:
- Race entry for your selected start wave
- Use of the changing rooms within the Jaarbeurs complex (note: there are no showers in the complex; plan accordingly)
- Access to the wardrobe — a staffed bag storage facility where you can drop off a small sports bag at the start of your race and collect it immediately after finishing
- Access to the full event atmosphere — the DJs, MCs, and all spectator areas throughout your session
The GYMRACE Origin Story: From Outdoor Mud to Indoor Race
GYMRACE was not created from nothing. It was created by the team behind Mud Masters — the outdoor obstacle race organisation that has run events across the Netherlands and Germany since 2012 and built one of the largest obstacle racing communities in the Benelux region.
The idea behind GYMRACE was straightforward: take the competitive race format and the community energy of outdoor obstacle racing, bring it inside an exhibition hall, replace the mud and the outdoor obstacles with gym-based fitness challenges, and create an event that works in any weather, in any season, and appeals to the large and growing community of gym-trained athletes who want to test their training in a race context rather than just a competition context.
The first indoor edition at the Jaarbeurs took place in 2019 — and the response confirmed the concept. The event sold out. The repeat events have followed the same pattern, which is why Saturday, May 2 is already almost sold out with the event still weeks away.
The October 2026 edition (October 3–4, Jaarbeurs Utrecht) is the second Utrecht GYMRACE of the year — announced simultaneously with the May edition, and already attracting pre-registration interest.
Training for GYMRACE: What You Need to Prepare
GYMRACE is accessible to anyone with a solid gym training background, but specific preparation will make the experience significantly more enjoyable:
Running capacity: The 5 x 1km running format means having a 5km base is the minimum; interval training that mixes running with strength work is the most directly transferable preparation
Functional movements to practise:
- Rowing ergometer (Concept2) — the rowing stations are a GYMRACE staple; if you haven't used a Concept2 before, a few sessions before the event will pay significant dividends
- Kettlebell swings and carries
- Box jumps and step-ups
- Pull and push movements under fatigue
What to wear and bring:
- Technical running gear or gym kit
- Training shoes suitable for both running and gym exercises (cross-training shoes are ideal)
- Water bottle; hydration stations are available in the hall
- Small towel — there are no showers, but you will need to wipe down
- Extra clothes to change into post-race; the wardrobe lets you store a bag from start to immediately after finish
Jaarbeurs Utrecht: The Venue Transformed
For the two days of GYMRACE, Jaarbeurs Utrecht is not an exhibition centre — it is a race arena.
The hall layout that normally holds trade fair stands and automotive exhibitions is completely reconfigured: the running circuit marked out across the full floor area, exercise stations positioned between running segments, spectator zones for the participants who have finished or are waiting for their wave, and the audio-visual infrastructure that delivers the event atmosphere.
The Jaarbeurs is located at Jaarbeursplein, Utrecht, directly adjacent to Utrecht Centraal station — making it the most accessible large-format event venue in the Netherlands.
Utrecht Around the Event
GYMRACE starts as early as 08:30 on both days and runs through to approximately 19:40 on Saturday and 19:00 on Sunday — a full day at the Jaarbeurs. For anyone travelling from outside Utrecht, the city's central location and the ease of the Centraal station connection make it easy to combine the event with time in the city itself:
- Oudegracht (Old Canal) — a 5-minute walk from the Jaarbeurs; the double-level canal-side terraces that fill in May evenings make it the ideal post-race recovery location
- Dom Tower (Domtoren) — the 112-metre Gothic tower visible from the Jaarbeurs; the tallest church tower in the Netherlands; worth visiting before or after the event
- Post-race food options: The streets around the Jaarbeurs and along the Oudegracht have dozens of options for the post-race meal that every GYMRACE participant earns
- Note: May 3 (Sunday) is also the date of the Solence / Dream State / Written By Wolves rock concert at TivoliVredenburg — the venue directly adjacent to the Jaarbeurs; a remarkable combination of events in one Utrecht day
May 2 Is Almost Gone. May 3 Still Has Time
Saturday, May 2 at GYMRACE Utrecht is almost sold out. Sunday, May 3 still has places — but the pattern of every previous GYMRACE edition suggests that waiting is not the right strategy.
Earlybird pricing at gymrace.com is structured in stages — each stage that closes means the next registration costs more. The current pricing (with savings up to €25 from the full ticket rate) represents the best value currently available for the most anticipated indoor fitness race in the Netherlands in the first half of 2026.
Register at gymrace.com. Solo or Buddies. Standard or Heavy. May 2 or May 3. Start times from 08:30.
